6th October 1928: scenes at the Ellerslie Racecourse, showing several races including the Mitchelson Cup and the demonstration after it.

“The demonstration followed the running of the chief event of the day, the Mitchelson Cup, in which fourteen horses lined up at the barrier and only seven took part, the remainder dwelling at, or in the vicinity of the post, their riders being under the impression it was no start. An angry crowd of backers surged on to the course in front of the birdcage voicing the protest that they had no run for their money. All attempts to clear the course failed and after the running of the next event, which resulted in three people on the course being injured, the three races still to be decided were postponed until Monday”. (Those were the days 1920s, p.158)
