James Smith Ltd hold their annual picnic for two thousand boys of the Tom Brown League (named for the “Tom Brown Suit” a popular item of boy’s apparel sold by James Smith Ltd in the 1930s) at William’s Park, Days Bay.
Many of the boys are wearing their suits for the picnic. Those who bought a suit were issued with a membership card to the Tom Brown League. They were also issued with vouchers for icecreams etc.
Various races are held and even the bandsmen race while playing their instruments.
Mr Alex P Smith, Managing Director and President of the League, addresses the boys.
The boys parade through the middle of Wellington with the brass band.
The picnics were held every year throughout the 1930s coming to an end with the beginning of the war in 1939.
