November 8th, day one of the 1976 Mobil Economy Run. 31 Crews ready themselves in Nelson for the 2161 Kilometre run of NZ assembled vehicles attempting to drive as economically as possible. Scrutineers inspect the standardised vehicles. The cars depart from Trafalgar Street for the West Coast and into Greymouth.

Day two sees the run leave Shantytown, pass over the Haast Pass and the Crown Range into Queenstown. Day three takes the drivers through snow and mountains to Invercargill. Here they have a car “Gymkhana”: precision handling tests. Day four in Invercargill via Millers Flat and Roxburgh. The race finishes in Addington, Christchurch.

1976 Winners, Bob Kidd and Jim Carder win for a second year running in a Triumph 2500 TC.
