CALLINGHAM, Judy, Presenter

An enquiry by Judy Callingham into the debate on legalising abortion in New Zealand.
(For reasons of anonymity, some of the voices of contributors to this programme have been deliberately distorted)
Includes interviews with women who have undergone illegal abortions; medical professionals; points of view on either side of the ethical and moral debate. One doctor posits that many abortions will be avoided in the future due to the development of postcoital contraception.
The availability of contraceptives is also discussed, and the discrepancy between the availability for single versus married women.
The discussion covers whether or not abortion should be legalised; how freely available it should be; who should perform abortions; the reasons women might require one.
