Music interviews, live performances, behind the scenes, industry issues, profiles, back catalogue, undiscovered, greatest hits, tall tales and true... all from a New Zealand/Aotearoa perspective.

On this week's 101 Charlotte speaks with Dr Fabio Morreale, lecturer of Music Technology at Auckland University, about the ways streaming platforms are shaping our listening habits, and catches up with Ben from Auckland band Mali Mali about releasing a new album while recovering from COVID19. Plus we feature a conversation between Marlon Williams and Finn Andrews, a live performance from Leisure and the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra, and The Mixtape at 4pm is with the Green Party's James Shaw.

12:25 p.m. Dr Fabio Morreale explains how platforms like Spotify influence our listening habits (10’13”)
Music Streaming Platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music and Tidal offer instant access to music in a way previously unimagined.
We can access full catalogues from almost any musician we want to. And they watch what we listen to and then suggest songs we might like.
Dr Fabio Morreale, lecturer of Music Technology at Auckland University is suspicious - Are platforms like Spotify monitoring and shaping our behaviour with music in a fair way?
Charlotte Ryan spoke to him about his research.

12:48 p.m. Ben Tolich AKA Mali Mali on releasing his new album... and testing positive for COVID19 (11’39”)
Ben Tolich AKA Mali Mali has had an eventful time recently - last Friday he released his new album and the same day was recovering at home in Auckland after testing positive for Covid19.
Mali Mali has toured Australia and New Zealand extensively both solo and with a band, and supported international acts like Perfume Genius and Boy & Bear. He has just released his 4th album called I Was Told to Keep an Eye Out
Charlotte Ryan spoke to Ben about the new album, and contracting COVID19.

1:06 p.m. WATCH: Under Cover with Marlon Williams and Finn Andrews
Like the rest of New Zealand, musicians Marlon Williams and Finn Andrews (The Veils) are in lockdown. They caught up via video chat to perform covers of one another’s songs, talk about their punk dads, and reminisce about backstage karaoke.
Before the lockdown, musicians Marlon Williams and Finn Andrews were set to embark on a series of collaborative songwriting sessions.
The day before Marlon was due to travel from his home in Lyttelton to Auckland, the Prime Minister announced New Zealand would go into level 4 lockdown within 48 hours.
Marlon and Finn’s meeting was postponed until further notice.
The pair decided to meet up online to share the trials of Covid-19 and isolation, how it’s affected their livelihoods, and what will happen on the other side.
Marlon Williams performs Finn Andrews' 'The Spirit in the Flame' from his debut solo album One Piece At A Time.
Finn Andrews performs Marlon Williams' 'Beautiful Dress' from 2018's Make Way For Love.

1:23 p.m. MC Slave on the new documentary Beastie Boys Story (10’09”)
Slave from Fat Freddy's Drop (AKA Rhythm Slave/ DJ Loggy Log) on the new doco and his love for the band.

1:38 p.m. Tash Sultana on lockdown, Pretty Lady, and making fans dance (11’10”)
Virtuosic one-person band Tash Sultana has a new single, a video made by fans, and they've just got engaged. Kirsten Johnstone catches up with Tash.
The bedroom studio sets we’re seeing a lot of from musicians during lockdown are no new thing for Australian multi-instrumentalist Tash Sultana.
It was this kind of jam four years ago, with a go-pro focussed on Tash with guitar, pedals, and a small mixer that kickstarted their career, and made them a stadium filling favourite across the world.
Currently on lockdown at their ten and a half acre property in ‘in the sticks’, they’re being as productive as they can, releasing a new single, working on the second album, keeping their fans involved, and doing media.

1:55 p.m. VIDEO PREMIERE: Rhian Sheehan ‘Still’
This is your first look at Rhian Sheehan’s stunning new video for his classic track ‘Still’. Shot and directed by Wellington photographer Mark Gee, it features awe-inspiring time-lapses of New Zealand’s night sky.
‘Still’ is taken from Rhian Sheehan’s new album Recollections, Vol. 1, a collection of 28 select works, alongside never-before-released tracks.
The release showcases the journey from one of NZ’s most acclaimed composers across a long & varied career.
The video for ‘Still’ was shot & directed by Mark Gee. It’s a collection of time-lapses captured under New Zealand’s night sky over the past 10 years.
Gee spent a lot of time under the starry night skies bringing this footage to life - for each 10 seconds of time-lapse footage, there’s 2 hours of actual capture time.
Locations across Aotearoa include the Wellington south coast, Wairarapa, Cape Palliser, Aoraki/Mount Cook.

2:50 p.m. VIDEO PREMIERE: Glass Vaults ‘Oils and Perfume’
We’re stoked to be the first to share the new song and video from psych-pop group Glass Vaults. ‘Oils and Perfume’ is the first single from the band’s new album Sounds That Sound Like Music, due out later this year.
The song’s video was inspired by 90’s dance floor hit ‘The Macarena’, as well as the band’s growing fascination with current dance phenomena seen on platforms such as TikTok and Fortnite.
Richard and Bevan from Glass Vaults both work with children and had become super interested in how these platforms had captured a generation of DIY dancers.
When New Zealand went into level 4 lockdown due to Covid-19, Rowan from Glass Vaults mobilised some of his dancer friends and colleagues to bring ‘Oils and Perfume’ to life visually.
TikTok-er Melissa Sripromma choreographed the dance and the final music video shows isolated home dancers performing the dance in their respective bubbles.
“We hope this song and the dance bring some joy while we are all in lock-down,” the band say, “Wishing you a peaceful rāhui and we’ll see you on TikTok.”
Glass Vaults formed in Wellington in 2010 and have since released a string of critically acclaimed records.
The core of Glass Vaults is Richard Larsen, Bevan Smith and Rowan Pierce. Although the band has its roots in Wellington, its members are now spread out between Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch.
2020 will see the release of Glass Vaults' third LP Sounds That Sound Like Music, which they promise will push deeper into the realms of avant-garde pop-funk.
‘Oils and Perfume’ was written by Richard Larsen, Bevan Smith and Rowan Pierce and was made with help from Tom Callwood (Phoenix Foundation), Charlotte Forrester (Womb) and Cory Champion (Borrowed C.S).
