The XVII Olympiad was held in Rome from 25 August to 11 September 1960. New Zealand sent a team of 38 athletes and ten officials, flag-bearer for the team was Les Mills.

One of New Zealand’s most memorable days at an Olympic Games was in Rome in 1960 when Murray Halberg won the gold medal in the 5000 metres within an hour of Peter Snell’s 800 metre victory. Snell had arrived at the Olympics a complete unknown, however, he won in a record time of1 minute 46.3 seconds.
