We are delighted to bring to our big Wellington Cinema screen this sensational home-grown opera, directed and produced by Peter Coates, who will be introducing this special screening. It was recorded in Studio 8 at Avalon Television Centre and was first screened by TVNZ on 2nd June 1984. As LCM Saunders’ review in the New Zealand Herald testifies it was “an artistic triumph”:
“The best prospect for opera in New Zealand, on a national and thoroughly professional level, is through the medium and resources of television. The telecast of Die Fledermaus from TV2 on Saturday night, must have won many converts among those who thought opera dull and unintelligible. The production by Peter Coates was an artistic triumph. It was brilliantly conceived for the television medium, and entirely faithful to the story and spirit of this delightful comic opera. Sung in a cleverly updated translation, almost all of it clearly delivered by the cast, it was lavishly presented. There was a top cast of experienced principals. Individually and together they kept the lilting music of Johann Strauss and the action very alive through a non-stop two hours of entertainment… this was Opera as it should be …. may television give us more.” — LCM Saunders, NZ Herald, 4/6/1984
Die Fledermaus will screen with a 15 minutes interval between acts two and three.
