We present episodes one and two of Gliding On, the popular, award-winning television series written by Roger Hall and inspired by his hit stage play Glide Time.
First broadcast in 1981 Gliding On satirises the paper-pushing Civil Service of the 1980s. Relive the old days, before privatisation and the stock market crash of ’87, when government department offices had tea trolleys, smokers had free reign and everything stopped for morning and afternoon tea.
Episode 1: "No Smoke Without Fire" (25.23 mins) first broadcast 31 August 1981
The executive officers insist the office practise first aid, civil defence and fire drills in case a major disaster should strike. Jim takes bets that he can’t stop smoking for a fortnight.
Episode 2: "Life’s What You Make It" (25.04 mins) first broadcast 7 September 1981. Hugh takes up cycling, John takes up walking and Jim becomes a blood donor. Mr Greensmith find life insurance isn’t the easiest thing to sell in this particular office
