Kaleidoscope: A Painter of Genius – a Documentary on the Life and Art of Frances Hodgkins

Considered to be one of New Zealand’s most influential artists this profile of the life and art of painter Frances Hodgkins (28 April 1869 – 13 May 1947) originally screened in 1989 as part of the iconic Kaleidoscope television series. Born in Dunedin, Hodgkins spent most of her working life in Britain. Her 56-year career as an artist earned her a secure place among the English avant-garde of the 1930s and 1940s – she was the first New Zealand-born artist to achieve such stature.

About Kaleidoscope

In November 2017, the Kaleidoscope series was inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World New Zealand documentary heritage register. It was produced by Television New Zealand and broadcast weekly from 1976 to 1989. As New Zealand's only television arts programme the series documented the widest possible range of our arts and artists, during a period of exceptional artistic endeavour. Kaleidsocope is part of the TVNZ collection owned by Manatū Taonga – the Ministry for Culture and Heritage and cared for by Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision. Lookout for more Kaleidoscope screenings in the TV Time slot – as the TVNZ collection is digitised we will bring it to the big screen.
