“Mani was born of indeterminate gender - meaning she had genitalia that combined the sex organs of male and female - which lead to a life of secrecy, surgery and shame. Typically, these days, intersex people are given surgery to help them conform to one gender – a practise that is increasingly controversial. One estimate is that one birth in 2000 produces a child with ‘ambiguous’ genitalia.

Mani Mitchell (she adopted the name Mani because in Sanskrit it means "neither male nor female") is truly a ‘third sex’. In a world where the language divides into ‘he or ‘she’, there is no pronoun to describe Mani. She accepts ‘she’ because it’s just easier that way.” (TVNZ Publicity)
