''What does it feel like to go to jail for the first time? Film maker Tearepa Kahi captures the Mt. Eden prison experience of 18-year-old Joshua, from the moment he is sentenced to the morning he is released.

Joshua grew up in South Auckland and dropped out of school by age 17, after which he started getting into trouble, mostly burglary, and by the time he was 18, Joshua was heading for prison. Ironically the night before he was to appear in court on burglary and receiving charges he went out on another burglary spree – and got caught yet again. The following day Joshua was sentenced to 11 months in prison.

Inside New Zealand: First Time in Prison sees Kahi use an intimate camera to capture Joshua’s Mt. Eden Prison experience - from the moment Joshua receives the Judge’s sentence through to the morning he comes out from behind the high walls and into the sunshine.'' TV3; tv3.co.nz; 16/10/2008
