The NZBU commentator, A L Curry presents a review of the Tobruk offensive from its start.
He tells how advance New Zealand units, after a little over a week from launching the offensive west of Sidi Omar, were in Tobruk. The first complete section of the NZ division entered Tobruk only 12 days after the start of the campaign. The NZBU team was able to join them two days later, fourteen days after seeing the NZ forces set out from their final training camp.
The offensive was launched west of Sidi Omar and carried north to Sidi Azeiz. The Māori Battalion stood guard against the enemy on the heights around Halfaya. Then followed the engagement as the New Zealanders rumbled towards Tobruk. The bitterest fighting began as the division forced a way to Gambut. The NZ forces were strung out from Capuzzo to Gambut succeeded in linking with the Tobruk garrison.
In the second week of the campaign German tank forces and motorised transports took action against the corridor. They attacked rear of the NZ forces from west of Capuzzo to the Gambit area. The Germans struck with the full force of his heavy equipment.
