As we've heard in the news, there's been wide-ranging reaction to National Party leader Jim Bolger's prospal to shift National to the right. In two speeches in the last 24 hours. Jim Bolger has advocated right-wing policies such as using private schools to provide publicly-funded education, and more user pays in health. Such proposals would apparently see National abandon the political centre ground to Labour. They will also affect National's coalition with New Zealand First - PACKAGE FROM Kerry Lamont

Outside political circles, reaction's been mixed. The Coalition for Public [illegible] says the prime minister is advocating an American style health system Coalition for Public Health spokesperson Dr Alister Scott says Jim Bolger's claims are absurd. AUDIO CUT

The Fire Service is expanding an innovative programme nationwide in an effort to reduce the increasing numbers of juveniles committing arsons. The appeal in the High Court in Wellington of the Winston Peters, Selwyn Gushing defamation case has ended. Mr Peters is appealing a District Court ruling in June of last year, that he defamed Mr Cushing in an Australian TV programme in 1992. Mr Peters is also appealing an award of 50 thousand dollars damages and 75 thousand dollars costs. IV WITH Our reporter Mark Henderson

In the United States, there's controversy over calls for hundreds of thousands of black Americans to stay away from work for a day.
