Insight '91 looks at the history of rugby league - its slow escape from what some call "nine decades of bigotry", the claim that its popularity is just media driven, and the future of the code.

Presenter Adele Broadbent begins with the history of rugby league, which can be traced to miners from the North of England. She then speaks about notable players, such as Mike Gilbert and Joe Karam, and there are excerpts from commentary and interviews.

League has been getting more media coverage, and there is increasing interest from the New Zealand public. There are comments from coach Graham Lowe, and from unidentified members of the public comparing league to rugby. Ken Laban then comments about the lack of supporting infrastructure for league.

Eddie Tonks speaks about rugby seeing league as a threat. This is followed by further comments from Graham Lowe, and Peter Peters.
