Spectrum was a weekly radio documentary series which ran on Radio New Zealand's National station from 1972 to 2016. Alwyn Owen and Jack Perkins produced the series for many years, creating a valuable library of New Zealand oral history.

The Golden Pliers competition held at Waikato's Field Days Exhibition, attracts farmers and fencing contractors from all corners of the North Island to test their skills with wire, post and strainer.

Waikato’s Field Days are held at Mystery Creek, Hamilton. Jack Perkins talks to Frank Prince, a fencing contractor, instructor and competitor in the fencing division who has been in the trade for 22 years. Prince enjoys the fellowship and fun at the competitions, and appreciates the bonuses of prize money, enhanced reputation and publicity. He says that fencing is harder than shearing, but is a good livelihood for those willing to work.

Prince explains the finer points of strainers – which are the important anchor points, or end assemblies. He says that there are fencing differences between the North and South Islands, and asserts that South Islanders can’t fence.

Fencing tools include chainsaws, augers (post hole diggers), spades, pliers, sledge hammers, and crowbars.

(Background sounds of hammers, chainsaws, augers, and loud hailers)

In the fencing competition, points are given for appearance, wire tension, and speed.
Penalties can be imposed for safety infringements or swearing. With the arrival of the Accident Compensation Commission, more stringent safety rules have been introduced.
In the past, both participants and bystanders have suffered injuries.

Fencers’ wives heard are joking and commenting during the competition.
