The last 24 hours has been a long time in politics - last night on Checkpoint we reported that National Party MP Jenny Shipley was moving to challenge her leader, Jim Bolger. By 10.45 last night, the coup was a success - a deal had been reached with Mr Bolger, which will see him step down from the end of the month, giving National Party leadership to Mrs Shipley.

Returning to our lead story - outgoing Prime Minister, Jim Bolger, has given his full support to his successor as National Party leader, Jenny Shipley in parliament this afternoon. During a debate on the leadership, Mr Bolger said it was time to move on, and the National Party was stronger for it. However the New Zealand First leader, Winston Peters, made it quite clear he won't tolerate any attempts to change the coalition agreement.
