McConachy, Clark, 1895-1980, Interviewee
New Zealand. National Broadcasting Service (estab. 1936, closed 1946), Broadcaster

Clark McConachy, born at Glenorchy in 1895, talks prior to leaving for the Billiards and Snooker season in England. Clark McConachy was New Zealand's greatest billiard player and was initially this country's only true professional. He began playing billiards at the age of 14.

Clark is about to compete in the world professional billiards and snooker tournament in England. He first played in a world championship in 1922 and was defeated. He found it very difficult to play with ivory balls, having been used to play with crystallite. It took him a long time to get used to playing with ivory.
His next world championship was in 1924, then in 1932. In both he was runner-up.

He is looking forward to this championship and thinks he is in with a very good chance of winning, although he has not played any big matches in a long time.

He and the interviewer discuss his past achievements. He played before the late King George V at the Marlborough Club in London in 1922. The king seemed to be a keen billiard enthusiast.

This will be the first time he has officially represented New Zealand, and he says he will do his best to uphold New Zealand's sporting prowess. He thanks his friends for all the good wishes.
The interviewer wishes him the best on behalf of the station.
