Byrd, Richard Evelyn, 1888-1957

Greetings from Admiral Richard Byrd to New Zealand radio listeners, recorded en-route to New Zealand during his 1947 expedition. [Operation High Jump.]

He says this will be his eighth visit to New Zealand. He was last in New Zealand during the war and he pays tribute to the country's fighting ability. He talks about the aims of the current expedition to the Antarctic.

Three groups operated flying boats from Little America and photographed the coastline, much of which was unknown. Planes equipped with skis flew inland and discovered land previously unknown, including new mountains. All this new territory was photographed.
