It includes a history of prior expeditions, including Mallory's and others in the 1930s. Attempts from the north via Tibet vs southern approaches via Nepal; 1951 British expedition under Shipton examined southern approaches; Hillary and Riddiford join Shipton party; climb of a neighbouring mountain, where they were able to see a possible route up Everest via South Col; Riddiford, Lowe and Hillary invited to join British party to observe Swiss 1952 attempt on Everest.
