A long awaited coronor's report into the police shooting of Waitara man Steven Wallace seven years ago has just been released. Mr Wallace was advancing on Constable Keith Abbot with a baseball bat threatening to kill when the officer shot him on Waitara's main street in April 2000. Mr Abbott was acquitted of murder five years ago in a HIgh Court trial following a rare private prosecution brought by the Wallace family. A coronor's hearing then resumed investigating whether the police followed proper procedures and offered enough medical help to the dying man. The lawyer for the Wallace family is Ron Mansfield . A senior police officer has told the High Court of sex being given as a gift to the man accused of covering up historical rape allegations against three police officers. 55 year old John Dewar is facing four charges of obstructing justice after the Crown says he covered up allegations made by Rotorua woman, Louise Nicholas. The Crown has now ended its case against Mr Dewar. Andrew McRae has been in court and joins us now. LIVE

National says it's time the Government told the State Services Commissioner to stand aside from an inquiry in which he will be a witness. Mark Prebble is heading an inquiry into how Madeleine Setchell - whose partner is a senior National Party staffer - came to lose her job with the Ministry for the Environment. He revealed yesterday that he knew the-then Environment Minister, David Benson-Pope, had commented about Ms Setchell to the Ministry's chief executive. Doctor Prebble said today he will get independent help on the inquiry. National Party Spokesperson Gerry Brownlee is with us now LIVE

Principals hope the suspension of three primary school pupils who shot at their classmates with an air gun will serve as a reminder for parents to lock such weapons away. St Patrick's School, on the Kapiti Coast, has suspended three 11 and 12-year-olds, after they took a BB gun onto the premises on Tuesday. Kathryn Jones reports. PKG

Victoria University's Salient magazine lists the ways to get handouts - including accommodation costs and money for a mobile phone. A former New Zealand Rugby League boss has been jailed for 21 months after admitting he fraudulently obtained more than $100,000 of gaming machine money. 56 year old Graham Carden was sentenced in the Wellington District Court on six representative charges including forgery and making false statements. The floods hitting parts of India, Bangladesh and Nepal are now being described as the worst in living memory. 17 million people have been displaced by the floods. They have been caused by monsoon rain that has been falling, non-stop, for three weeks. Army helicopters are dropping relief supplies in north east India, but aid agencies are warning of shortages of food and clean drinking water. Alison Cordwell reports: PKG
