In 1969 English composer and musicologist, David Fanshawe, journeyed through parts of Africa making rare recordings of African tribal music. 'African sanctus' is a blend of African music and European elements conceived in the form of a mass. Wendy Dixon and Rachel Weston (sopranos), John Wells (piano), Auckland Dorian Choir (augmented), Karen Grylls (conductor) with David Fanshawe mixing the live elements with recorded African elements feature in this production. David Fanshawe also introduces the piece and sources much of the African material on the first tape. This first New Zealand broadcast of the work was recorded in the Auckland Town Hall.
