Wiremu Kerekere presents a report on the tangihanga for Tonga Awhikau a prominent Taranaki Māori elder who has died at the age of 102 years. His tangi was attended by mourners from all parts of the country.
Speakers from Taranaki, Waikato, Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāpuhi and Rātana paid tribute to this great man, whose life had spanned over a hundred years of history. He had memories of historic events such as the battle of 'Te Ngutu o te Manu', over ninety years ago. He also recalled such personages as Major von Tempsky, and the great Māori leader Titokowaru.
The church service was led by Rev. H.A. Darville, of the Hawera Methodist Māori Mission, Rev. Rangi Rogers (Ngapuhi) Methodist Māori Mission Auckland, and Rev. Akonga Pihema, of Waikato.
The women present a traditional poi, "No o Mai - Lie peaceful in your place."
A tribute on behalf of pakeha was given by Mr L.A. Taylor of Hawera, who was then garlanded in mourning kawakawa.
