Selwyn, Kahu, Speaker/Kaikōrero

Unedited interview with an elder from Te Waipounamu, Kahu Selwyn.

He explains how the name Te Umu Kaha, which is the proper name for Temuka, became known as Temuka, and the meaning of the word.

He speaks about his family background and his tribal affiliations, which are Ngāti Huirapa on his mother side and Ngai Tuahuriri on his fathers side.

He explains that his family took the name 'Selwyn' from the missionary Bishop Selwyn. During the Bishop's visit to Moeraki, Selwyn's grandfather was the first Māori child he baptised. He asked the child's parents if they would allow him to bear the Bishop's name, Selwyn. That is how the family gained their Pākehā name Selwyn. He also explains the origins of his Māori name, Te Amomohaere Karoua Herewini Kaipuke.

He recites a prophesy from the Ratana Church.
