Ko Tamatea te marae, no te waka o Takitimu.

Early 1830's the whalers arrived and the Māori became part of the whaling and sealing industry. A rangatira by the name of Taiaroa married his first cousin whose surname was Karetai, e ai ki nga kōrero he nui atu nga whenua a Karetai.

Two of the main tribes in Te Waipounamu are Ngāti Mamoe, and Ngai Tahu.
A pakeha named Watson orchestrated the fund raising for the new Church in 1940 and opened in 1942.

The interviewee was signed by three of the chiefs from the area named Karetai, Koroko, and Kaikoura.

The wharenui was started in 1944 and completed and opened by Mr Fraser in 1946, the then Prime Minister.

The carvings are in concrete, these were made for a meeting house in
Hawkes Bay called Te Moana, because it was never erected it was given to Ngai Tahu to establish the whanaungatanga of Ngai Tahu, Kahungunu and Ngāti Porou. The carvings were made by a pakeha named Thomson. The area is known as Otakou.
