The art of carving to Māori is ancient and of local origin perculiar only to New Zealand, similar also in the moko.

Designs used by Taranaki Māori is quite distictive and different from all other NZ designs.

In 1936 the late Sir Apirana Ngata said that the Māori people of Taranaki where one of the most stubborn, proudest and inttelligent of all Māori races.

The speaker also states that the people there were steep in tapu and makutu, whilst the kehua roaming the land was just an element.

In carving he says that the Māori there was pre-eminent. August of 1958 a tauihu was discovered at a beach near Mt. Egmont.

Hine e te Huhi was the women to whom the elders gave trhe responsibility of looking after their many taonga. Taranaki have many authentic designs which over the years have been preserved by their kuia and koroua. The speaker goes on to describe many of the designs.
