On the 2 June 1979 the people of Tuhoe opened their new whare runana
Mataatua was offically opened, which had taken some four years to build.
This whare runana was the last whare to be supervised by the late John Taiapa.

Highlights from the event as follows.

Te Arawa was welcomed onto the Marae at 8am and they took with them the
family of the late John Taiapa.

- Kaikōrero : Kaumatua/John Rangihau

After the mihimihi the Taiapa family unveild the commerative plaque. During
the morning the offical party led by Minister Ben Couch were welcomed onto
the Marae where the Minister performed the opening ceremony.

- Karanga/Haka pohiri/Action song : Ka horo aku ringa nei/Ko te rangatahi e.
Te Whenua e takoto nei.

- Kaikōrero : Makarini Te Mara

- Kaikōrero : Renata Wharetini?Waiata - Pinepine te kura.

- Kaikōrero : Mr.John Keiley. (Mayor of Rotorua)

- Kaikōrero : Kara Puketapu (Secretary of the Māori Affairs).

- Kaikōrero : Mr. Ben Couch (Minister of Māori Affairs).

- Waiata : Huai huai/Uhi tai uhi tai hei.(Wellington group).

- Himene : Tama ngakau marie.

- Kaikōrero : Rev Tame Takao (Moderator of the Presbyterian Māori Synod).

Offical opening by Mr. Ben Couch (Minister of Māori Affairs).

Entertainment was provided by a group from Wellington who traveled with the
Minister.
