When the Department of Māori Affairs was devolved two new agencies were set up to take over: one was known as " I.T.A ", the Iwi Transition Agency, charged with helping tribal and iwi authorities to set up their operations, and assist them in taking on a range of financial obligations.
Manatu Māori is a ministry reporting to the cabinet minister
responsible for Māori Affairs. It works at very high level on a par with Treasury, advising goverment on matters of policy, monitoring and advising goverment departments on their implentation of the partnership concept of the Treaty of Waitangi, liaising with iwi authorities and providing support services where it seems appropiate.
Bruce Burn speaks with Rongo Wirepa, manager of iwi liaison for Manatu Māori, on all aspects of the devolution of the Department of Māori Affairs, and the many hui held around the country.
An excerpt is heard from the hui held at Poho-o-Rawiri marae.
Diane Tomoana questions the influence any one iwi would have over the new Manatu Māori.
