Wiremu Kerekere introduces a report by Selwyn Muru on the recent announcement that the Polynesian Panthers and Ngā Tamatoa are recipients of Governor General's Youth Awards.
They are among five groups that have been selected for their services to the community, and each group will receive a grant of $250.00.
The Polynesian Panthers were one of the recipients and their Chairperson, Will Ilolahia, speaks with Selwyn Muru about their work.
Kaikōrero: Will Ilolahia talks about the racial discrimination young Pacific people are facing; how the Panthers have developed from gang members to political activists, and they are currently working on a legal aid book for young people. They have some Māori members and also some Pākēha supporters.
Kaikōrero: Syd Jackson of Ngā Tamatoa talks about also receiving one of the awards. He says it may make them more respectable in the eyes of Māori elders. He discusses the aims of Ngā Tamatoa and some of their current projects.
Kaikōrero: Eddie McLeod, Community Advisor for the Auckland City Council and former Chair of the New Zealand Māori Council, talks about the justification for the work of Ngā Tamatoa and Polynesian Panthers and the need for a voice for urban Māori and Polynesian people.
Robert Mahuta, the new Director of the Māori Studies Department at Waikato University talks about his appointment.
Kaikōrero: Bob Mahuta.
Wiremu Kerekere visits Beresford Street School. He talks to Headmaster Pierce Blanc about the plans for a new intermediate school in Ponsonby, which will target the largely Pacific Island community there.
