Waikato hui - opening of "Kimiora" [1 of 2 recordings.]

On the 8th February 1974 the new Dining Hall at Turangawaewae was
officially opened by her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

- karakia by elders of Waikato. The foundation stone was laid by Te Reo,
head of the Ratana Church on the 23rd May 1973.

Work on Kimiora began in June of 1963. Wiremu Kerekere gives an over
view of the building and its structures, which is unique, distinctive and yet in complete harmony with Mahinarangi and Turongo Wharenui.

Many Māori attended the lifting of the tapu ceremony on Thursday the 7th
February on "Kimiora" followed by the dedication service by the Bishop of
Aoteroa Right Revered Manuhuia Bennett.
