New Zealand Broadcasting Service. Mobile Recording Unit

Mrs E A German, of Balclutha (Clinton), describes her parents' reaction on arrival at Port Chalmers (her mother had expected to be able to grow oranges), and her own recollections of life in the 1870s, including children's life, schooling, pets, catering for numerous visitors, cooking, grinding wheat by hand, the introduction of fish and birds, native birds - "all good
game", and comment about funerals, with a whispered reference to "Romans".
