Its twenty five years today, since an Air New Zealand jet crashed into Mount Erebus in the Antarctic, killing everyone on board. In Spectrum this week David Steemson talks to two families who lost loved ones. Here’s Spectrum, and “Erebus Memories”.

Reporoa farmer Peter Dean still wakes every morning at 2.30, the moment he heard that all on board Flight 901 were feared lost on Mount Erebus.
His twenty two year old daughter Kay was amongst the 257 killed in the Air New Zealand crash twenty five years ago on the 28th of November.
These days Kay’s ashes and those of her Swiss friend Jurg Meier lie beneath an ash tree in the grounds of Reporoa College, where she was a top student and athlete. A small plaque marks the spot.
Kay was ending her fourth year in law studies at Victoria University when she died. She was a member of the Territorials, and her mother Barbara says she was being “wooed” to join the police force.
Malyon and Marjorie Allan from Hawkes Bay were making a bit of a party on their day out to the Antarctic. Seventeen year old daughter Jane was along for the ride, as were their great friends, the Williams.
Malyon Allan had chosen the November 28th flight, because it was hosted by adventurer Pete Mulgrew whom he’d lectured at Naval College.
David Allen says the day he lost his parents and younger sister was a “bloody awful” one. These days a plaque and a small mulberry tree in a Hawkes Bay garden remember Malyon, Marjorie and Jane.
