The Newmans Brothers 16 seater cars, “big whites”, leave Nelson transporting passengers and mail through the Buller Gorge to Westport.

En route, the cars pass through Stoke with a visit to Mr Gilbert’s apple orchards and harvesting at a hop farm. Over the Hope Saddle, the cars arrive in Murchison and then it’s onto Lyell and the Inangahua River Junction. The cars must negotiate the tricky roads of Windy Point and Little Hawkes Crag and then cross the Buller River on a punt. Their final destination is Westport.
