HMS Laburnum docks at the port and officers disembark. Mr Veitch, Mr Armstrong and Harbour Board Officials welcome them.
Carnival contests and activities. Crowds watch from a grandstand, men in white jackets and women in hats.
Cakes are suspended from a line and young boys try and eat them with their hands tied behind their backs.
Men compete in a tug of war and an obstacle race. There is also a contest to catch the greasy pig and remain on a greasy pole.

The Whanganui East Gala Day is held at the Whanganui East School grounds on 29 November 1934. Six hundred children are in fancy dress. The adults and children perform folk dances on the field.
