Completed as a second year exercise at the University of Auckland School of Fine Art. Rodney Charters notes “While in my second year at art school I decided to make a film - it’s probably one of the first rock videos ever made. But to keep it in perspective, Man Ray was shooting available light film of the lights in Paris in the 1920s. I was influenced by the Beatles’ early films. Shot on 16mm with my father’s bolex and cut with a razor blade, it was a great success. Shelly was an architectural student and Ted was a painter at school with me. The beaches are Whatipu and Karekare on the West coast of the North Island.” - http://web.mac.com/rodneykiwi ; 26/05/2006
Further personal comments from film-maker: “We used a Fiat 500 lent to us by Bob Harvey. We took the door off for low angle tracking shots and could shoot 360 degrees by opening the roof. The Auckland band the Ladedas agreed to lend us their music. They also did covers of the Yardbirds music The film was cut to the music giving a syncopated quality. It was shown at the Sydney film festival in 1967. I achieved entry into the Royal College of Film on the basis of this film.”
