Harold Piper (1899-1965) was a pioneer aviator from Banks Peninsular. In April 1930, Piper and Cyril Kay flew from the United Kingdom to New Zealand via Sydney in a single engined aircraft. They were the first New Zealanders to do so. In 1936, Piper launched the MAYO composite aircraft in Rochester, England. The aircraft separated in mid air. The story was reported on British television.
