Walter Lassally said: “the job of a director of photography is mainly to create atmosphere appropriate to the story being told”. This is done primarily through camera movement, framing and lighting.

By varying camera angles and the distance of shots, and by panning and tilting the camera, the cinematographer creates different effects.
