Temporary Deposit Hiatus

Currently, we have a hiatus on receiving any new material until further notice.*
This is partly due to our focus on an urgent, multi-year project to preserve large Crown collections on at-risk magnetic media. You can read more about that project here. It’s likely that we’ll only have until about 2025 to digitally preserve over 300,000 items or they’ll be lost to future generations of New Zealanders. Because assessing and processing new deposits is resource-intensive, pausing them will allow us to make faster progress on this urgent preservation project.
We are also assessing our collection and preservation priorities, including updating our Selection and Acquisition Policy which will inform our ongoing selection priorities.
The hiatus provides us the opportunity to assess our archival backlog and refine our acquisition processes so that when the hiatus lifts, we can make collecting decisions and process new deposits in a more timely manner. If you have material you hope to deposit with us in the future, you’re welcome to fill out our Collection Offer Form. We will use this form to contact you once our collection hiatus lifts and we are ready to assess new deposits.
Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions.
*This hiatus does not apply to contractual agreements, such as Te Māngai Pāho funded content.
