1970s

The 1970s brought a dynamic mix of disco, New Wave and early punk.

Golden Harvest, “I Need Your Love”

Flared pants, huge hair and plunging necklines – Golden Harvest nail the look of 1977 in their video for “I Need Your Love”. Comprising brothers Kevin, Gavin, Mervin and Eru Kaukau plus vocalist Karl Gordon, the band released one album and played support for Bob Marley and ELO. The song won the 1978 New Zealand Single of the Year.

Suburban Reptiles, "Megaton”

One of the country's earliest punk bands, Suburban Reptiles brought fun, glam and a near punk-parody to the New Zealand music scene. Formed by a number of art school students, the Reptiles here perform around downtown Auckland. They contributed songs to the soundtrack of David Blyth's feature Angel Mine. After performing at the film’s premiere, members of the band would eventually form The Swingers.

Tina Cross, “Everybody Let’s Dance”

Tina Cross' funky disco hit “Everybody Let's Dance” features a packed dance floor, mirror balls and a rainbow of lights. The video for the compelling tune was filmed at Avalon Studios and was released the same year she won the Pacific Song Quest with “Nothing But Dreams”. “Dance” was the most successful single from her debut album You Can Do It.

Th’ Dudes, “Walking in Light”

Capturing much of the strut and posturing of the Th' Dudes, the “Walking In Light” video is a fairly literal interpretation of the lyrics. From their second album Where are the Boys?, the video for this single uses some clever tricks to make the most of small spaces. Most of the band attended Sacred Heart College – the same as brothers Tim and Neil Finn.

Mi-Sex, “Computer Games”

From a time when computers were room-sized, tape-based and deeply confusing comes this New Wave anthem. The video features the band breaking into Sydney's Control Data Corporation to tinker with the mainframe. It includes graphics from the arcade games Speed Freak, Basketball and Star Fire. The second single from their debut album, it peaked at No. 1 in Australia and No. 5 in New Zealand.
