Peha Wharekura, kaumātua from Waahi Marae, welcomes the troops to Tūrangawaewae Marae.
Wharekura was a graduate of the traditional Tainui Whare Wānanga and was steeped in Tainui/Waikato tikanga. We have little other information about this respected kaumātua.

Tiaki Hira speaks, most likely on behalf of King Korokī. His speech finishes with an ancient chant.
Hira was spokesman for Kings Mahuta, Te Rata and Korokī and his words carried much weight and gravitas. He was a graduate of the traditional Tainui Whare Wānanga and was steeped in Tainui/Waikato tikanga.

Mutu Paratene Kapa, 1870-1968 (Waikato, Ngāti Maniapoto, Te Aupōuri)
Mutu Kapa welcomes the members of the 28th Māori Battalion who have arrived at Tūrangawaewae.
Kapa was a well known and respected clergyman and kaumātua with lines of descent from Tainui and the northern Te Aupōuri iwi. Kapa had a strong connection to the Kingitanga. On his death, because of these ties, there was much debate about where he would be interred. He was buried at Ōtāhuhu.

Rev Ngātete Kerei Kukutai, ?-1966 (Ngāti Tipa)
Rev. Kukutai was a much respected member of the Methodist clergy and well known to both Māori and Pākehā.
In 1934 he embarked on a lifetime of missionary work in the King Country before being ordained a Māori Minister in 1941. He was appointed personal chaplain to King Korokī prior to retiring in 1954 and settling in his home town of Tuakau. He was awarded the M.B.E. in 1961 for his long service to the Māori people.
