Talk about Farming in New Caledonia by Alan Purdie:-

"The island of New Caledonia is under developed as far as farming is
concerned. Through-out the interior cleared land has been allowed to
become overgrown again. Diversification is important to the French
people. All farmers are involved in several different types of farming.
Most of the stock is fattened for beef. Dairying is limited because of
the low butter fat content of the milk, which is unsuitable for making
butter. Pigs are in good order. Sheep are found only in isolated places
and in very small numbers. The grasses are rather poor compared with the
Heretaunga plains of Hawkes Bay".
