Talk by Sergeant Frank Hayes, Christchurch. "Travel in New Caledonia".

"There are few travel facilities in the New Zealand sense. There is one
small railway and public buses connect most of the outlying areas with
Noumea. Many soldiers rely on hitch hiking to get about. You can spend
some time waiting for a lift, but you get to know a lot of people.
Travel on the public facillities is out of bounds for the soldiers.
Hitch hiking has a lot of Pros and Cons and can produce some amusing
incidents".
