Part 1 of 3

Talk by Sergeant Paul Krause of Saint Helens Bay Auckland. Sgt Krause
took part in the reconnaissance party landing on Nissan Island.

"A Commando raid on Nissan Island was made to make contact with natives
in the mission area and to provide protection for specialist personnel
who were making various surveys. We searched the mission area but it
seemed deserted. The second phase was to survey the coast for possible
landing beaches. While we were approaching two camouflaged barges we
were attacked by the Japanese who killed the coxwain and put both
gunners out of action. Private Jefferous was responsible for knocking
out the Japanese machine gun. Half of our party were killed, including
Lieutennant O'Dowd, before we were able to escape".
