The French hostages held by Kanak separatists in New Caledonia have been released after being held captive in a cave on the island of Ouvea for 14 days as the Kanaks increased their action for independence, by French military action.

The Minister of Finance says New Zealand has its first Budget surplus in 35 years. After 3 years of Rogernomics, Mr Douglas announced this afternoon that the government now has a surplus of 467 million dollars.
