There's increasing speculation that not even the French Presidential victory of Francois Mitterand, will help New Zealand's cause in the Alain Mafart and Dominque Prieur controversy.

While President Mitterand won the French elections, he was a clear loser in voting in New Caledonia. The right-wing candidate, Jacques Chirac won 90% of the vote there. Although the main Kanak party, the FLNKS, which supports Mitterand, had ordered its supporters to boycott the poll.

There are many who believe the only way for Māori people to get a fair deal in education - is for a system of separate Māori Schools. It's a called echoed in the Royal Commission on Social Policy, and leading Māori educators now believe the time is right.
