A pay rise for MPs was announced today of around 9.5%. The increase is to cover a 2-year period but as usual the deliberations of the higher salaries commission sparked off a heated debate on the financial worth of our politicians.

French Colonial rule in New Caledonia may be coming to an end. The new French Minister of Overseas Departments and Territories, Oliver Stern, is calling for an end to what he describes as the 'colonial situation' in the Pacific territory.
