Some of the major interested parties who'll be working to influence the passage of liquor legislation to be introduced this month, believe the most radical aspects of the bill won't get very far. The new bill proposes lowering the drinking age to 18, allowing alcohol to be sold in supermarkets, and allowing some Sunday trading.

Police in Fiji have interrogated more than 50 people in the past 24 hours following the discovery of illegal weapons in several parts of the country. Among those detained is a cabinet minister of the deposed government of Dr Timoci Bavadra.
