The chairman of the failed Bridgecorp group is fighting a ban on him being a director for other companies for two and half years.The two police officers shot today at a house in Christchurch were there almost by accident - they were door-knocking in the neighourhood looking for information about someone at another address.Both are now in hospital where one has been having surgery - the police dog with them was killed.The District Commander, Superintendent Dave Cliff is now holding a news conference with the Police Minister Judith Collins.We'll cross there shortly. Fiji's military leader Commodore Frank Bainimarama is threatening to put off elections planned for 2014 blaming constant interference by Australia and New Zealand.The Commodore says interference from both countries forced the Prime Minister of Vanuatu Edward Natapaei to pull out of holding a meeting in Suva of the influential Melanesian Spearhead Group or MSG. Mr Bainmarama has hit back by expelling the Australian acting high commissioner, Sarah Roberts, for "conducting unfriendly acts". The mother of a prison officer who was killed while on duty is angry she wasn't told the offender was appearing in court today or that he pleaded guilty.Jason Palmer, died in hospital after being attacked at the Spring Hill Prison in North Waikato in May.The 21-year-old inmate Latu Kepu has now pleaded guilty to manslaughter and he'll be sentenced in September.Ada Palmer, who lives in the US, says the Corrections Department told her they would stay in contact and send her information about her son's death, but she says she's heard nothing. Pre-RecDepartment of Corrections has given us a statement saying it is in contact with members of Jason Palmer's family both here and in the United States.The Department hopes to discuss its findings from the investigation into the death soon, but says some of the information the family wants can't be provided until after sentencing and the coronor's inquest.

The Somali Islamist group Al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for two bombings which killed more than seventy people in the Ugandan capital Kampala yesterday. Al-Shabab has released a statement threatening more attacks if Uganda and Burundi do not withdraw their troops from Somalia. An internal investigation by the Israeli military has largely exonerated the commandos who boarded a flotilla of aid ships bound for Gaza - and says they weren't prepared for the hostile reception they received. Nine Turkish nationals were killed in the incident in May. The author of the report Giora Eiland (pron: gheer-rah AY-lund) says errors were made both in the planning and execution of the operation. A man who poured boiling water over his partner and terrorised her for several days is tonight beginning a seven and a half year jail term. Dean Griffiths, who's 41, was sentenced in the Wellington District Court on a number of charges including wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. A Māori Party members' bill to remove the goods and services tax from healthy foods will fail its first test in Parliament.But Labour has added its weight to the argument for change by firming up its position on removing GST from fresh fruit and vegetables.However without National's support, the Māori Party does not have the numbers it needs to get the Bill to a select committee.
