News from the Pacific presented by Don Wiseman, Radio New Zealand International. In this weeks programme:

France thinks about a referendum on self determination for French Polynesia; Tonga's Government offers pay out to the families of victims of the Ashika sinking to forestall court action; Fiji plans to relocate squatters; There've been calls in Solomon Islands for a change in the law which gives RAMSI soldiers immunity from prosecution; A commmentator in Papua New Guinea says the standoff over the huge Ramu nickel project can be solved if there is more openness; Plans are being revived to ease the population pressure on the main atoll of Kiribati by considering moving people to Christmas island; Indonesia's government has been accused of clamping down on the most prestigious and well-established NGOs operating in the Papua region following its decision to ban another leading agency from working there; and New Zealand comedy duo the Laughing Samoans performing one of their skits. The duo, which is made up of Eteuati Ete and Tofiga Fepulea'i, is to perform a show in Papua New Guinea next month, and is expecting their humour to translate.
