Checkpoint programme starts after the news and weather forecast:
1. Legislation to allow the Development Finance Corporation to drop the small business agency is likely to be introduced into parliament next week. The change will be part of a package of reforms that will lift restrictions from the DFC and pave the way for eventual privatisation.
2. Figures out today show unemployment in Australia jumped sharply during July, from 7.6% to 8.3%, the highest monthly rise in four years, and another blow for the already hard-hit Australian economy.
3. The South Pacific Forum got underway today in Fiji with the issue of New Caledonia overshadowing all others.
