The Samoans are New Zealand's largest immigrant population after the Australians and the British. In 1986 more than 50,000 New Zealanders claimed to be of Samoan origin. They came here as a result of a long and bitter-sweet colonial relationship with New Zealand. The Samoan-New Zealand story is one of wars, epidemics, and a bid for independence which ended in a bloody massacre. It is a relationship that even now is feeling the heat as New Zealand politicians try to deal with the greatest unemployment this country has seen. This week on Insight the end of the Samoan immigrant quota - is this a slap on the face for a former kiwi colony???
